There are some recipes that feel more like a memory than a meal, and these oven baked 4-ingredient beef crescent dippers are one of them. This is the sort of easy supper or hearty snack that belongs on a warm porch at sundown, with paper plates in hand and everybody reaching for just one more. With flaky crescent dough wrapped around savory beef and melty cheese, it is a practical Midwestern kind of recipe too—simple ingredients, little fuss, and plenty of comfort in every bite.

These dippers are mighty good on their own, but I like to set them out with a little bowl of warm queso, salsa, or even ranch for dipping. If you are turning them into supper, serve them with a crisp green salad, a bowl of tomato soup, or some baked beans and fresh summer vegetables. For porch sitting or game day snacking, a plate of pickles and a cold glass of iced tea goes right alongside.

Ingredients

1 pound ground beef

1 can refrigerated crescent roll dough (8-count)
4 slices American cheese, cut in half
1 packet taco seasoning

Directions

1. Preheat your oven to 375°F and line a baking sheet with foil for easy cleanup.

2. In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until fully browned, breaking it up into small crumbles as it cooks. Drain off any excess grease, then stir in the taco seasoning until the meat is evenly coated.

3. Unroll the crescent dough and separate it into 8 triangles. Place a spoonful of the beef mixture on the wide end of each triangle, then top each one with a half slice of cheese.

4. Roll up each crescent, starting at the wide end and tucking the filling in as best you can. Arrange them seam-side down on the prepared baking sheet.

5. Bake for 11 to 14 minutes, or until the crescents are puffed and golden brown and the cheese is melted. Let them cool for 2 to 3 minutes before serving warm.

Variations & Tips

Use another cheese: Cheddar, Colby Jack, or pepper jack all work nicely if that is what you have in the refrigerator. American cheese melts especially smooth, but any good melting cheese will do the job.

Make them a little heartier: If you want to stretch the filling, stir a couple spoonfuls of softened cream cheese into the hot beef. It makes the middle extra creamy and helps hold everything together.

Keep the filling from leaking: Let the cooked beef cool just a touch before filling the dough, and do not overstuff the crescents. A modest spoonful gives you the neatest roll and the prettiest golden bake.

Serve for parties: These can be made ahead by browning the beef earlier in the day. When folks are about to arrive, all you need to do is fill, roll, and bake for a hot snack that disappears in a hurry.
